Emergency physicians (EMs) care for critically ill patients with both acute and chronic disease, yet many EM physicians are reluctant to discuss treatment options with patients and their families because they perceive they lack the training, skills, information, and time to engage in these difficult “goals of care” conversations. This workshop offers an opportunity for providers to embrace new skills, and for educators to experience a novel model to facilitate learners in the mastery of new skills.

There are many aspects to running an emergency medicine clerkship, yet many clerkship directors have not received formal training, and must often learn on the job or from directors of other medical school rotations. This workshop will provide foundational skills to help clerkship directors effectively run an emergency medicine clerkship. Particular emphasis will be given to fourth-year rotations, including the advising of students pursuing careers in emergency medicine.
